Many of you are familiar with radiologists performing an ultrasound assessment eg to image your unborn child when pregnant. We use Real-Time Ultrasound machines to image your muscles and this is especially useful in assessing and retraining your ‘core’ muscle – the Transversus Abdominis.
We watch how well the muscle contracts with various tasks and also the pattern of activation relative to the other abdominal muscles. Because you can’t really feel what is going wrong yourself, watching it on the screen helps you to correct the muscle’s action and make sure you are practising the correct method at home.
It can also be helpful to look at the deep stabilising muscle in your lower back, the Multifidis, and we can image elements of your pelvic floor function to check if you are contracting those muscles effectively.
